In 1971, Carolyn Davidson, then a graphic design student at Portland State University, crossed paths with Phil Knight, the future founder of Blue Ribbon Sports, later known as Nike. Knight, aware of Davidson’s quest for extra funds for oil painting classes, enlisted her help on various projects at a rate of $2 per hour. When Knight decided to embark on establishing his athletic shoe brand, he tasked Davidson with creating a distinctive stripe or image for the shoes. Davidson conceived the Nike Swoosh, a dynamic checkmark shape symbolizing movement and speed, while also subtly alluding to the brand name, Nike, inspired by the Greek goddess of victory. After some refinement, Davidson handed over the design to Knight for a modest sum of $35. Despite Knight’s initial reservations about the logo, it became an integral part of Nike’s brand identity, propelling the company to become one of the most renowned athletic shoe and gear brands worldwide.

The Role of Carolyn Davidson:


At the time of designing the Nike Swoosh, Davidson was a graphic design student seeking additional income. Post-Swoosh creation, Knight accepted her design, and Davidson continued to contribute to Nike until 1975. Upon graduating, she transitioned to freelance work from home for approximately 30 years.

The $35 Compensation:


While the exact duration of Davidson’s work on the Nike Swoosh remains uncertain, she billed Knight for 17.5 hours, resulting in a $35 paycheck. Despite the modest initial payment, Davidson’s contribution was later acknowledged by Nike through a celebratory party and substantial stock in the company, estimated to be valued at over $1,000,000. Additionally, she received a diamond and gold ring featuring the iconic Swoosh design.
